Friends in Need; RL with Azula

After securing a worldhop (which was actually pretty hard to get, considering all the crazy "shadow" things going on, but Ryan is magic and gets what he wants), Ryan showed up at the AU house that's completely empty. Well, okay then. Azula always struck him as a minimalist so, cool.

He wandered through the place a little cautiously, since he knew that Azula was a little... um, easily annoyed. "Azula?"

"I figured as much." He shrugged. "But if you're happy how you are, I can't really blame you for wanting to stay that way."

"'Happy' is the wrong word."

He frowned. "Then what's the right one?

"How should I know?"

"Because you're smart." Okay, that was a little like a challenge. Well, hey. It was deserved.

"Smart enough to know that emotions are pointless and paying attention to them is even worse."

"That's not true." Ryan shook his head and made a face. "Emotions are part of you, so they have to be important. Otherwise, you wouldn't have them. And... no offense, Azula, but you not paying attention to your emotions has brought you here." He gestured to the room, indicating the house as a whole. "You can't ignore something important to you."

Another haughty sniff. "I don't know what you're talking about."

He frowned. "How can you not? You really cared about Dr. Cuddy, right? And... you know, you trying to hide that, it's put you in a situation where... um, you know. You're here, instead of dealing with it in a way that doesn't feel awful."

"I want to be in here."

"Well, yeah, but..." He shook his head. "Never mind, I guess. I don't really know if this is healthy or not, though I don't really think it is, so..."

"It's a house. What's unhealthy about it?"

"Um. Not really the house itself." He fidgeted and almost got up, but that wouldn't do much. "It's just like... You're sleeping in an empty house because it's a replica of the place you can't get to any more, you know? And it's... kind of unhealthy - I mean, there's no heating or anything, and even though you... like, accept the situation logically, you're still emotionally too invested in it. I guess? I don't know. I'm probably wrong, I don't know how you cope with stuff, but I'd be worried about myself if I spent too much time here."

"I like it here," she said flatly.

"Well, yeah..." He sighed. "It doesn't matter. If you like it here, then it's good."

"And better than being at home all the time."

"I can totally understand that." He stretched his arms over his head. "I mean, you have way more responsibility than me, but being stuck at home sometimes can drive you crazy."

"And I haven't abandoned the Fire Nation," she said somewhat defensively, as if expecting him to accuse her of just that. "I meet with my advisers every day, and I make appearances, and I do paperwork and direct troops and settle disputes..." Her voice trailed off.

Ryan raised an eyebrow. "I wasn't going to say you had..."

"Good. Because it's a stupid accusation."

"I think I know you well enough to say that you love your country too much to just leave it."

"Precisely. I have a duty."

"I hope you don't let what people say on the community get to you."

"Why would I? They don't know me. They don't know anything about me."

"Exactly why you shouldn't listen to them." He smiled. "It sounded like you thought I was going to listen to them myself."
