Friends in Need; RL with Azula

After securing a worldhop (which was actually pretty hard to get, considering all the crazy "shadow" things going on, but Ryan is magic and gets what he wants), Ryan showed up at the AU house that's completely empty. Well, okay then. Azula always struck him as a minimalist so, cool.

He wandered through the place a little cautiously, since he knew that Azula was a little... um, easily annoyed. "Azula?"

The infuriating part was that she knew he was right. She wasn't about to admit that, though.

"Nothing is obvious. You don't even know me."

"Maybe I don't, but I know what you're doing. You're not the only person I know who thinks they can be an island in the ocean, you know."

She kicked a leg out and sat up just a little, wishing she'd brought the blankets from the other room along with her. "Then what are you talking about? 'Emotionally'? Pathetic."

Ryan frowned, feeling kind of like he was being attacked all of a sudden. He knew it wasn't directed at him, but that tone...

"It's not pathetic! There's nothing pathetic about knowing how to deal with your emotions!"

Ryan looked sorely offended at that idea. "You can't just get rid of your emotions!"

"Maybe you can't."

"Nobody can! If you weren't supposed to have them, we just... wouldn't have them! Emotions are important, they help you feel what's right for you or not!"

Ryan shook his head emphatically. "No, you're supposed to learn to balance them with reason. You can't go through life not feeling anything!"

Ryan had never felt as bad for Azula as he did that moment. "You don't mean that."

"Of course I do."

"But... Why would you want that?"

"It makes things better." Azula was completely waffling between the present tense and the conditional tense-- between acting like it was true, or acting like she just wanted it to be true.

"No it doesn't. It just makes your life emptier."

"No, you know what makes my life emptier?" Azula snapped. "This sort of thing." She gestured around the empty room.

He paused. "...Well, yeah, but..."

Oh, who was he kidding? He was probably wrong, anyways. He wasn't any good at convincing people of anything - that was Troy's thing. "I guess..."
