Welcome to the ever-expanding FAQ regarding Ryan Evans from High School Musical. Before we begin, I should remind you that this is all interpretation, and I've not done any of it lightly.
So, who is this dude anyway?
For those of you who don't know, Ryan Evans is from the Disney movie series High School Musical. He's Sharpay's brother and probably the most fabulous kid on the block. He tries hard to be liked by people, even though following along with Sharpay's schemes can kind of put a damper on that. He's kind of in his sister's shadow, too, though he's trying hard to break out and be his own dude. He's also kind of forgetful and can be a little slow on the uptake, but he's by no means stupid.
Does he know he's in a musical?
No. Ryan is from a universe where bursting out in song is pretty much the norm, so he doesn't notice that he's singing and not talking. If somebody brings it up with him, he simply will not get what they're talking about. You could play a recording for him of him singing to someone through comments and he wouldn't get it. It's just how he is in his universe.
Is he aware of stuff like sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll?
As to the former, I have some very complex ideas about how this works in a world run by Disney rules, but for simplicity's sake, he knows of the former two vaguely and of course he knows rock 'n' roll! What kind of musical entrapeneur wouldn't?
Soooo... is he gay?
Ryan lives in a world where guys just don't hold hands with other guys, and they don't sing together in the rain or have climatic kisses at the end of the movie. He's basically closeted, though it's more out of necessity than anything. After all, if he doesn't say one way or another, he can blend in and hold hands and all that with just about anyone he likes. Besides, he gains nothing by coming out in his own world, since... there's not really anyone like him that he can see, and he's not going to put himself out like that. He's under the impression that he's weird (and not unjustly, really) and because of that, he just... doesn't get that there are actually other gay people out there and he's not the special snowflake he thinks he is.
Why is he gay, though? That's not canon, is it?
Ryan's from a world where alternate sexualities are just not... normal. As in, anyone who's gay, bi or anything other than platonically heterosexual just doesn't show up. Ryan kind of breaks the mold for Disney, in my opinion, because he's deliberatley ambiguously gay. In moviespeak, he's what they call a "coded gay" character - you can read a more detailed analysis here. What this means is that while Disney hasn't said "yes, he is" or "no, he's not," it's still implicitly implied that he is.
Is he ever going to get with the program?
Probably eventually! For now, though, he's just being his ambigous, fabulous self. You're welcome to raise the topic ICly with him however you want, of course; I don't mind a nice shove in the right direction! He's not going to go out of his way to say "hey, I'm gay" though, so don't be prepared for any weepy uke crap. If anything, he'll probably only come out when he's completely exasperated with something going on; I imagine having to tolerate everyone around you getting "hitched" (in Disney's style, at least) with their girlfriends and boyfriends while he's stuck without someone of his own gets pretty irritating.
YOU MIGHT NOTICE ALL OF THIS IS ABOUT HIM BEING GAY but that's only because I... don't have any things I can think of that need to be addressed other than his sexuality and him being in a musical. Any questions, feel free to leave a comment here or talk to me on AIM. :)
